A Guided Tour of Symbolic Sites of Political Repression in Montreal

Sunday, January 16th at 2pm

Berri Square
(corner Berri and Ste. Catherine, Berri-UQAM metro)

FREE! Warm drinks will be served on-site.

In the lead-up to the Popular Forum on Countering the National Security Agenda, the People’s Commission Network invites you to a guided tour of symbolic sites of political repression in Montreal. Come discover a sordid and little-known side of the city: its history of mass arrests during demonstrations.

Be it the 108 arrests that followed the “Commando Bouffe” action at the Queen Elizabeth hotel or the 371 people arrested on March 15th, 2002, these events all have one thing in common: the majority of charges resulted in acquittals.

Facilitated by arrestees themselves, the walking tour will also provide an opportunity to reflect on the broader scope of political repression in general and on the means by which to resist it.

Concordia University
Room H-110

You don’t like the truth - 4 days inside Guantánamo is a documentary based on security camera footage from the Guantánamo Bay prison.

This encounter between a team of Canadian intelligence agents and a child detainee in Guantánamo has never before been seen. Based on seven hours of video footage recently declassified by the Canadian courts this documentary delves into the unfolding high-stakes game of cat and mouse between captor and captive over a four day period. Maintaining the surveillance camera style this film analyzes the political, legal and scientific aspects of a forced dialogue.

This special screening is co-sponsored by Tadamon!, Amnesty International Canada, and the People's Commission Network, and will feature guest speakers Yavar Hameed and Béatrice Vaugrante.
